Based in Melbourne, Victoria, Sleepers was founded by Zoe Dattner and Louise Swinn in July 2003. Zoe and Louise are aided and abetted by a team of interns and work experiencers, too many and too valuable to mention, as well as a veritable smorgasbord of mentors and friends, not to mention our long-suffering families. We aim to build a broad desire for and recognition of good writing by publishing and promoting new and emerging authors.
The annual Sleepers Almanac has met with wide acclaim. We’re also publishing novels, a collection of short stories, and we have published a book of illustrations, not to mention a book about toast!
Sleepers is proud to be a member of SPN: the Small Press Network. SPN was formed in 2006 by some of Australia’s most committed independent publishing houses. To find out more about SPN, click here.

After graduating from Monash with a BA in critical theory, Lou’s publishing career kicked off at CAD User, being inducted into the world of magazine layout and subediting. While completing a Diploma of Professional Writing & Editing at RMIT, she was president of Visible Ink, and worked as an Editorial Assistant at Meanjin.
Post-uni, Lou worked at Pan Macmillan and MEA and was General Manager of a web publishing software company before founding Sleepers with Zoe. Lou has been involved in judging the Age Book of the Year, the Age Short Story Competition and the Victorian Premier’s awards. She was a founding board member of SPN: The Small Press Network, and currently sits on The Stella Prize board. Her fiction has been published places including Meanjin, Best Australian Stories, Overland and New Australian Stories, her reviews appear in the Age, Australian, Australian Book Review and the Sydney Morning Herald, and she has been in conversation with authors including Edward St Aubyn, Elliot Perlman, Eleanor Catton, Dave Eggers, Vendela Vida, Sarah Dunant, Kate Mosse, and Peter Carey. Lou is the Editorial Director of Sleepers.
While studying for RMIT’s Diploma of Professional Writing & Editing with Lou in 1998/99, Zoe became the Treasurer and designer for Visible Ink. Zoe then worked as Marketing Coordinator for Macmillan Education Australia for two-and-a-half years, where she was able to complete a publishing apprenticeship of sorts, before quitting her job to start Sleepers in 2003. She has worked on many freelance design, public relations and marketing projects in the arts and in business management, and consults and writes regularly on publishing and ebook issues.
Zoe was a founding board member of the Small Press Network, and the general manager there for four years, and currently lectures in digital publishing at the University of Melbourne. Zoe is the Creative Director of Sleepers.
